Spent good deal of yesterday working on the computer. Hard drive has been making screechy noises, and thought it might be going, and the floppy drive had quit working(really only use it to d/l pics from wife's Sony digitial camera). Went out and bought a 320 gb drive for $122 to replace the 80 gb drive on the pc (a new 80gb drive is $85). Figured to partition it up and have more drives. Anyway opened computer up, and full of dust, cobwebs, dog hair! After carefully vacuuming and blowing compressed air from can, cleaned it all out. Also found out I was short a power connect to add the new drive, so went to local computer guy and got a Y power cable to add the power supply connect. The data cable was okay. Got the drive installed, but real hard working in confined space. Finally, in the end did not need to do anything, as cleaning out the machine got the floppy working, and now the old hard drive is humming along with no noise. Think I am going to move the computer up on the desk, off the floor, to get less dust and dirt.
I got this program that would clone my old drive over to the new one. ie. clone the old drive c: and make a new drive c: on the new HD. However, it will not just move programs. Data moving ok. Cloning ok. To move programs from one drive to another, you have to have the original media, s/n, registries, updates, etc, etc, and reinstall them one by one. PITA Guess piracy is a worry!? However, would like to move them to a new volume and just leave the operating system on drive c:. Just not sure I still have all the orignal media
Memory is so cheap now. My machine now has storage up the ying yang! But moving programs as said will be a pain _________________ Rick

You can do it if you want to play around in the registry, but its usually easier just to re-install them on the new drive. Finding the key file is usually tough and many of them hide it well.
The old Norton's used to have a part of it that allowed you to fix them but the one time I did use it things only got worse. At any rate these days I just do the re-install.
If the machine is XP, Microsoft has a file transfer system. Not sure if that helps either, but you can research it at their site. |

Talking about dirty PC's, I found like three or four coins in my old machine when I cleaned it last week.
Don't know how they got there, but I got myself a free soda. _________________ Juan E. Botero

Probably change that came from one of the vending machines where Rick sent you. Lucky for you they didn't lock it up when they saw you coming. |
